AWASTER<\/span> for the <\/span>Adriatic<\/span>: <\/span> education<\/span>, the<\/span><\/span>businesses<\/span><\/span><\/span>, <\/span> circular economy<\/span><\/span> to transform <\/span><\/span><\/span>waste into a resource<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n

Can waste become a resource for businesses<\/strong>?<\/span><\/p>\n

And how can young people<\/strong> become drivers of change for the future of the Adriatic region? <\/span><\/p>\n

These are the questions that inspired the development of AWASTER \u2013 Adopting WASTE as a Resource<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>the project funded by the Interreg Italy-Croatia Programme, in which we took part<\/span> as a partner between <\/span>March 2024 and August 2026<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The project was developed by a cross-border partnership<\/strong> comprising <\/span><\/span><\/span>the<\/span><\/span><\/span>Istrian Regional Energy Agency<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, lead partner, from the<\/span><\/span><\/span>Association Sunce of Split<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, from <\/span><\/span><\/span>VeGAL<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, from <\/span><\/span><\/span>GAL 5<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> with its head office in <\/span>Kor\u010dula<\/span>, from<\/span> <\/span><\/span>Municipality of Casarano<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> and<\/span><\/span>our team<\/span><\/span><\/span>. Over the course of more than two years\u2019 work, the consortium has promoted educational programmes<\/span><\/span><\/span> for schools<\/span><\/span><\/span>, pilot initiatives for the local communities and operational tools to support businesses in applying the principles of the circular economy. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Young people <\/span>as drivers of change<\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n

One of the most important aspects of the project was the awareness-raising <\/strong>activities aimed at pupils from schools of various types and levels, who, through<\/span> practical activities, developed skills and gained an understanding of how their everyday decisions can contribute to protecting the environment.<\/p>\n

In particular, during the educational workshops, the pupils learnt how waste can be transformed into new products through 3D printing, how organic waste can be turned into compost, and how everyday habits affect the amount of waste ending up in the environment<\/span><\/p>\n

Our <\/span><\/span><\/span>contribution<\/span><\/span>:<\/span><\/span> the involvement of the<\/span><\/span><\/span> SME<\/span><\/span><\/span> and<\/span><\/span> the challenge of the<\/span><\/span><\/span> reproducibility<\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n

Over the <\/span>two<\/span> years of the project, particular attention has been paid to the involvement of small and medium-sized enterprises<\/strong> and to strengthening their role in the transition to a circular economy<\/span><\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/span> through <\/span>a training programme<\/span>, the exchange of experiences<\/span> and the presentation of exemplary examples<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We have <\/span><\/span><\/span>made available <\/span><\/span>our<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> economic and financial skills<\/strong> <\/span><\/span>to develop<\/span><\/span><\/span> guidelines <\/span><\/span>dedicated to the <\/span><\/span><\/span>involvement <\/span><\/span>of SMEs <\/span><\/span><\/span>and <\/span><\/span>to the organisation<\/span><\/span><\/span> of training workshops for<\/span> entrepreneurs<\/span><\/span>. Our contribution <\/span><\/span><\/span>also<\/span><\/span><\/span> includes <\/span><\/span>the development<\/span><\/span><\/span> of a collection of best practices <\/span><\/span>related to<\/span><\/span><\/span> models of sustainable business, <\/span><\/span>conceived <\/span><\/span><\/span>to <\/span><\/span>encourage<\/span><\/span><\/span> the application <\/span><\/span>of circular economy principles across companies operating in different sectors. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We have also<\/span><\/span><\/span> organised two events aimed at <\/strong><\/span>the entrepreneurs and stakeholders <\/span><\/strong>in the Veneto region <\/strong>: one in collaboration with the Padua Chamber of Commerce \u2013 <\/span>Venicepromex<\/span> dedicated to<\/span><\/span> manufacturing sector<\/span><\/strong>, and another aimed at actors<\/span> in the<\/span> agri-food supply chains <\/span><\/strong>in collaboration with <\/span>CibuSalus<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Veronamercato<\/span><\/a>, where <\/span>the main existing regulatory instruments were discussed, along with the benefits <\/span>of<\/span>the circular economy, it’s been <\/span><\/span> promoted the <\/span>cooperation between various local stakeholders to promote a <\/span>more efficient use of resources and <\/span>the<\/span>reduction of waste. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Results and prospects of the AWASTER project<\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n

The results <\/span>of this collaborative work<\/span> have been presented during the international conference<\/strong> held on the island of Kor\u010dula<\/span><\/span><\/span> on 16 June. The <\/span>event<\/span> brought together representatives from the public, educational <\/span>and business sectors, as well as <\/span> <\/span>r<\/span><\/span><\/span> egional development agencies<\/span> and <\/span>to the<\/span><\/span><\/span> civil society organisations from Croatia and Italy.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

During the conference, the main results <\/span>achieved<\/span> by AWASTER<\/span> were presented: <\/span>more than 500 students<\/strong> took part in the educational activities and the <\/span>EcoLab, hundreds of entrepreneurs<\/strong> took part in the project\u2019s activities and more than 1,600 items of waste <\/strong>were <\/span><\/span><\/span>collected<\/span><\/span><\/span> from the beaches <\/span>in the pilot regions<\/span><\/span> thanks to the involvement of local communities<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

During the event, the importance of education was emphasised together with the involvement of young people <\/span>and businesses <\/span>as drivers of long-term change. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The experience of AWASTER highlights <\/span><\/span><\/span>how<\/span><\/span><\/span> raising awareness<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/span>is<\/span><\/span><\/span> an important first step, but <\/span><\/span><\/span>also points out <\/span><\/span><\/span>the importance of <\/span><\/span><\/span>cooperation and <\/span><\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span><\/span>joint action between educational institutions, the public sector, businesses and organisations within civil society<\/span><\/span><\/span> to <\/span><\/span><\/span>to produce lasting results.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>Cross-border cooperation<\/strong> is at the heart of projects of this kind. AWASTER has demonstrated that waste can become a valuable resource <\/span><\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> and now it is up to us to transfer the project\u2019s findings to other areas<\/span><\/span><\/span>, ensuring<\/span><\/span><\/span> that the knowledge gained will live on<\/strong> even after it has ended<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>\u201d<\/em>, <\/span><\/span><\/span>emphasised Marin Mileti\u0107 regarding the Interreg Italy-Croatia programme.<\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

AWASTER is an Interreg Italy\u2013Croatia project that has promoted the circular economy in the Adriatic region by involving schools, local communities and SMEs. Through educational activities, pilot schemes and practical tools for businesses, the project has helped to raise awareness of the value of waste as a resource and of the role of cross-border cooperation in the transition towards more sustainable development models.
